The Dragon Warrior in Everyone
“Quit, don’t quit. Noodles, don’t noodles. You are too concerned with what was, and what will be.” -Oogway
Kung Fu Panda is definitely one of my favorite movies. There is so much humor and wisdom throughout the movie that it always gets me thinking. But the most recent thoughts I've had while watching Kung Fu Panda revolve around Po.
At the beginning of the movie, we see that Po is lazy, over weight, and has no kung fu training at all. This is where we get to the part of the movie where Po is chosen to become the Dragon Warrior, a legendary warrior who is destined to protect the Valley of Peace. Upon seeing Po, everyone thinks this is a mistake, even Master Shifu who is supposed to be training Po. But in all his wisdom, Master Oogway knows better.
The movie continues with Master Shifu trying to get Po to quit, and continuing to believe that in all Po's weaknesses, there was no way he could be a kung fu master. He does this until Master Oogway changes his perspective, and then departs from him, leaving Shifu completely to the task of guiding Po.
He then starts to see the potential in Po, past his weaknesses and trains him to combat a great evil that was headed to destroy the Valley of Peace. And not long before the enemy arrived, he was ready to read the Dragon Scroll. This scroll was said to hold ultimate power that would be granted to one worthy enough to read it. But, when Po opens it up, he finds that there is nothing written there. Only a reflection.
Po later comes to the realization that he is the 'secret ingredient' and he's had the power to defeat his enemy this whole time. (The secret ingredient refers to his father's Secret Ingredient Soup that turns out to have no secret ingredient.)
I write all this to say that as humans, we all have weaknesses. If you're anything like me you're painfully aware of the numerous faults that you have, but here's the cool thing. God wants to use our weaknesses. It's in our weaknesses that he is shown to other people. When we come to the end of ourselves, we have no choice but to let God take control and carry us when we wouldn't be strong enough to do it on our own.
That's how a panda with no kung fu skills whatsoever could become a great warrior who can stand against evil. He had plenty of weaknesses, but was still able to come against evil.
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
